(Sex) bomb threat

So I took this wholly unscientific (as most of them are) quiz that’s been making the blog rounds. Some of the results are accurate and others not, but for the record, I am so not a sex bomb. (With 6/10 for some of the dimensions, I’m perhaps just teetering on the cusp of bomb-ness.) But seriously I’m wincing right now at how many times the word “sex” appears:

eXpressive: 6/10
Practical: 4/10
PhYsical: 6/10
Giver: 6/10

You are a XSYG–Expressive Sentimental Physical Giver. This makes you a Sex Bomb.

You are sexy sex sex sex! The sexness! You are the sexiest, hottest and most charismatic of all types. You are a captivating speaker and a great dinner date–relaxed, self-effacing, charming and generous. Your type probably has origins in something sad–trying to keep the peace in a tough family situation, or an early heartbreak–and you’ll probably want to address and resolve that at some point, but in your relationships that heartache is pure gold!

You lie effortlessly–not necessarily a bad thing. You can have problems with fidelity. You need frequent praise and validation, and in seeking it you can make decisions that aren’t consistent with your general good judgment. In other words, don’t cheat on your significant other just because someone is paying attention to you.

You strongly dislike conflict, and will avoid it. Like an XPYG, you give so much of yourself to your partner that you feel dismissed and unappreciated if you don’t get the same in return. But you internalize your feelings more and have a hard time getting over them. You don’t want to cheat–you just keep finding yourself in vulnerable situations. But you’ll stay with your partner in the long run from guilt and a desire to please.

Your sex life will always be hot. You are one of the rare people who can keep the fires of passion going forever–if you find a good match. Find another XSYG and you will never need (or want) anyone else again.

Of the 28587 people who have taken this quiz, 9.1% are this type.

Now if I could just get that Tom Jones song out of my head.

Spiffing!

The website for the movie Bright Young Things (based on Evelyn Waugh’s Vile Bodies, directed by Stephen Fry) has a neat thing called the “Splendidiser” (Flash required). Just type in a phrase or URL to make you sound more jolly well splendid. Try it out. The results can be slightly different each time. I put in my own website, and it’s kind of funny that sometimes it’s hard to tell which is my own writing and which is part of the splendidisation, with some sentences collapsing under the weight of their playful encrusted adornments: “Rather! Utterly on the beastly contrary, oh, the frightfully horrid searing burden of knowledge. Good God, old chap, now let me go gouge my eyes out. Darling, kidding, isn’t it too divine?! But still, grr!”

Spiffing, I tell you! (Link via Skunkeye.)

Itch to switch

I wasn’t going to write about this until I had my newly purchased technology in my hot little hands, but what the hell. I’m too excited. So you know I’ve been itching to get a new computer and to switch to Mac, and the other day I finally ordered an iBook. (I’ve drunk the Kool-Aid, as PJ commented. And by the way, many thanks go to Gene, whose auspices are much appreciated.) Expect more gratuitous fawning over the computer when it actually arrives. It should be here in a couple of weeks at the most. Okay, I’ve just jinxed it, haven’t I?

I also ordered an iPod, which is due to arrive in a few days, ahead of the mother ship. Ah, excitement. The other feeling of the moment: TGIF! Have a great weekend, kids.

Still here

Just to run down some highlights from the last few days… Friday: we saw Troy at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse. Basically it was what I expected. And putting aside Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom (whom I’m not really into anyway), Eric Bana was the guy I watched most closely. Good looks and good acting. Saturday: we went to the Kennedy Center and saw The Producers. I bought the last few tickets available for the sold-out closing weekend in D.C., and I’m glad we went. Lots of fun.

Monday: Thom went to get his hair cut (finally, though I’m not one to talk since I haven’t had a haircut in about a year), so I met him in Dupont, and afterwards we had dinner at this new-ish, nautically themed Greek restaurant called Mourayo, on Connecticut Avenue a few doors down from Bistro du Coin. It’s excellent. One of their offerings is a special prix fixe dinner in honor of the Olympics. It’s available throughout August for $25, which is quite a deal. Last night: speaking of food deals, California Tortilla was giving away free chips and queso (with purchase of entrée), which they do occasionally, so we went there for dinner. Afterwards we visited the Apple store in Clarendon, since I’m really close to getting a new iBook, and wanted to check out the goods in person. Mmm, Apple. Very soon. I can taste it.

Hold the kitchen sink

The other day, about mid-afternoon I went to get a sandwich at The Brown Bag, a great little take-out place that caters to Bethesda working stiffs like me, but when I got there and saw that they were closed (I could’ve sworn they’re open until 4 p.m.), I went instead to Subway across the street. I ordered a cheese steak, and as the young woman behind the counter started assembling it, she asked me what I wanted on it. “Everything,” I said.

Now, by “everything” I naïvely meant everything that usually comes with the cheese steak, not everything available in the store. The inkling that this was her interpretation came to me when she started putting some kind of hot sauce on it. I thought, okay, I wasn’t expecting that, but fine. It was quite clear, though, when she reached for the cucumber slices. “No!” Picture me lunging forward in slow motion, pressed up against the sneeze guard. I think she got the message.

Speaking of food, California Tortilla is one of the places my co-workers and I like to go to periodically for lunch. Great burritos. Yesterday was the grand opening of the new location in Arlington (Courthouse). Everyone who stopped by got a free burrito and soda, so after work Thom and I went to check it out. There was a line that stretched to the end of the block and around the corner, but it went pretty quickly and the some of the employees came outside to hand out their very good chips and queso. Mmm. We got to meet Pam, who writes Taco Talk, their wacky newsletter announcing deals and specials. We finally arrived at the head of the line and ordered, and in the short time that it took for Thom to give his e-mail address to one of the employees to sign up for the newsletter, our burritos were ready. I had the Thai chicken burrito (mmm, spicy peanut sauce) and Thom had the honey lime, which is probably my favorite. Oh, we’ll be back for sure.

‘Family Guy’ mini-marathon

If you’re still not on the Family Guy bandwagon, despite my occasional heaps of praise in these pages, check out the show tonight and next week at 8 p.m. when Fox runs a mini-marathon (so more like a 10K, say) of classic episodes from the first three seasons.

[Addendum (12:14): On an unrelated TV note, I think it says something about the relative (un)importance of the Olympics in my viewing regimen that I am more upset about an Amazing Race “spoiler” than ones for Olympic events. The past few days when I’ve inadvertently seen event results online in advance of viewing the competition, I thought, eh, I wasn’t really going to watch the whole event anyway. But just now I came across a blog where the title of one entry loudly proclaims which team was eliminated from The Amazing Race last night. Grr! I suppose that’s fair. The episode has already aired; I just haven’t watched it on TiVo yet. Oh, the searing burden of knowledge. Now let me go gouge my eyes out. Kidding. But still, grr!]

Pike and tuck

In the last few days the only Olympic event I’ve watched closely is men’s synchronized diving. (Yes, even more than gymnastics.) That is some good stuff right there. The agility and grace, and yes, the little Speedos. Don’t think I didn’t notice. The Greek pair took first place in the springboard event yesterday, winning Greece its first gold medals of these Olympics. Not so good was that the mid-afternoon broadcast on NBC ran past the allotted timeslot, and so TiVo didn’t catch the very end. (Aside: as some sort of publicity stunt, a spectator evaded security, walked onto a springboard, and belly-flopped into the pool before he was taken away by police. Wacky. This incident, somehow not surprisingly, was not shown by NBC.) Individual diving events get underway this Friday.

Speaking of the Olympics, Tina and I were talking about the reportedly slow ticket sales for the various events. I mentioned one article that quoted people who were able to walk up and get tickets at the last minute. I looked at my work calendar and said, “You know, the Olympics aren’t over yet…” And she replied, “Ooh, Priceline!” Don’t worry, I’m not rushing off to Athens. I only wish I could.

Pen show

I read on Amanita.net that there was a fountain-pen show in the area last weekend. (All of a sudden the “Dog Show” sketch from Saturday Night Live pops into my head. Everyone, beat your little drum and yell, “Pen Show!” But I digress.) I love fountain pens. I’ve been meaning to acquire more of them; the only one I have right now is a Rotring, which I received as a birthday present a few years ago, along with a bottle of Parker Penman ink–a little web research tells me that this line has been discontinued, so perhaps I should use it sparingly–in the color mocha. Mmm, mocha.
